About SHPE Jr

SHPE Jr

About

SHPE Jr chapters provide youth with opportunities to participate in hands-on STEM activities. SHPE Jr. Chapter members also receive mentoring and develop leadership skills through the active involvement of SHPE Chapter members. UNT SHPE currently mentors a robotics team at the Buinger Career and Technical Education Academy located in Bedford, Texas. Team 13657, Wonder Women, is an all-girl team that through SHPE mentoring was able to make it all the way to the qualifying rounds of the previous competitive season.

Goal

The goal of SHPE Jr is to show students that a career in STEM is not impossible. As a chapter, UNT SHPE wants to help students of all ages in the denton community take on opportunities and challenges that will better their future. Science is too wonderful for it to be exclusive and too important to leave anyone out.

Events & Outreach

Outreach

Events

There are a multitude of events that students can participate in including, Noche de Ciencias and ACE Science days. These events provide students the opportunity to participate in hands-on STEM activities, meet current college students, and interact with professionals from a wide variety of industries.

Noche de Ciencias

These local family science nights are designed to inspire students to pursue STEM careers, while also educating their parents on ways to support their child’s goals. Each event offers interactive STEM activities where students can learn about STEM majors and careers from current university students and industry professionals. At the same time, parents are engaged in bilingual workshops where they are introduced to STEM, college options, financial aid, and next-steps preparation for higher education.

Ultimately, this event introduces future leaders to the SHPE Familia. We help both students and parents understand that a future in STEM is possible and that they don’t have to do it alone.
